5 Phrasal Verbs with 'Speak'

One of the reasons why phrasal verbs are so tricky is because a phrasal verb can have several different meanings in different contexts.

Here are some phrasal verbs using the word ‘speak’ and some of their meanings.

Speak up

Meaning: to raise the volume of one’s voice. For example, “I can’t hear you. Speak up.”

Speak out

Meaning: to be vocal about an issue and not stay silent. For example, “More women are speaking out about domestic violence.”

Speak for

Meaning: to speak on behalf of someone. For example, “She is only a baby. Her mother can speak for her.”

Speak to

Meaning: to converse with another person. For example, “I spoke to my mum on the phone.”

Meaning: to resonate with a person and be significant to them. For example, “The artist’s paintings really spoke to me.”

Speak about

Meaning: to discuss a topic. For example, “Meet me at 6pm to speak about your homework.”
