British Fiction Book Suggestions for English Learners

This week’s blog post has been written by Sarah from thelittlecontemporarycorner.com.

Reading novels is an excellent way to improve your English skills. Reading for an hour per day is important for everyone, especially English learners. It will help you understand written English a lot better, see grammar in use and expand your vocabulary.

An easy way to learn English would be to read a book in English that you have already read in your own language. Harry Potter, for instance, is a great example of that.

Young Adult (YA) novels are becoming extremely popular and they are a great place to start reading in English. If you’re looking for some British YA novels, take a look at these:

A Quiet Kind Of Thunder by Sara Barnard
Sara’s novels are romance based - with a twist. A Quiet Kind Of Thunder follows an unlikely meeting of two people who are unable to speak, but they form a unique friendship. It’s a very heart-warming novel – and very typically British.

My Heart Goes Bang by Keris Stainton
This book is perfect for learning about the British University experience. It follows a group of girls who live in a University house together, and their adventures over the year. It has wonderful characters and a great storyline.

Unboxed by Non Pratt
Non writes YA novels with themes of friendship. Her stories are easy to follow, with realistic storylines. Unboxed follows four teenagers who come together after several months apart.

Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman
If you want something with an alternate society and to look at the political side of Britain, Noughts & Crosses is an excellent read. It takes a thought-provoking look in to racism and prejudice in an alternative Britain.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
For something a little spookier, The Graveyard Book follows a boy who is raised by ghosts in a graveyard. If you like horror, this would be a great place to start!

A Change Is Gonna Come
Trying out different genres in one place can be great for learning English and figuring out what you like. A Change Is Gonna Come is an anthology of stories and poetry by all British authors. It focuses on minorities living in Britain and shows a usually undiscussed range of people.

Giant Days by John Allison (Graphic Novel)
Giant Days is a graphic novel based on three friends starting University. It’s an easy and pleasurable read with excellent artwork. If you like graphic novels, this would be a great place to start reading English in small bursts.

I hope you find this post useful. Leave a comment if you try any of the books and follow me on twitter here.
