Popular Conversation Topics and Related English Vocabulary

Whether you are studying for IELTS, Cambridge exams, or just want to be able to hold a fluent conversation with others in English, you can benefit from learning new vocabulary related to popular topics. Popular topics with examiners are - the internet, technology, travel, transport, education, health, society, music, television, hobbies, family etc.

You could select one of these topics, use the vocabulary provided in the graphics below, and hold a conversation with an English-speaking friend, a new person you could meet at an organised language exchange in your city, a fellow student (try finding other people like you via Facebook groups such as www.facebook.com/teatimeenglishuk ), or with one of our qualified native teachers at Teatime English (email us for a trial class).

Always try to showcase your English levels by using higher-level language. For example, instead of saying: "Nowadays, we have really good technology," you could say: "Nowadays, we have cutting-edge modern technology." This will show the examiner that your English level is far beyond basic. Practise with others first to ensure that your usage of these terms is correct.

Tip One: try finding some idioms which fit well with these topics too. For example, if talking about 'travel', you could say: "I adore Paris. I have been there many times and I know the city like the back of my hand." Remember, not everything you say to the examiner has to be true!

Tip Two: try finding some related phrasal verbs too. We have a specific blog post about this here. For example, if you are discussing 'travel', you could say: "I'm a fan of getting away and, from the moment the plane takes off, I'm full of excitement! I always look forward to exploring and looking around a new city."

Please add any useful vocabulary you have learned in the comments below.
