5 Phrasal Verbs with 'Sit'

Phrasal verbs can give more meaning than just verbs alone. Here are some phrasal verbs using the word ‘sit’ and some of their meanings.

Sit up

Meaning: to have good posture and sit tall in a seat.

Sit around

Meaning: to sit and do very little. For example, “He sat around all day instead of working.”

Meaning: to gather, sitting, around an object such as a table or fire. For example, “We all sat around the table on Christmas Day.”

Sit together

Meaning: to sit with other people. For example, “Let’s sit together in the meeting.”

Sit out

Meaning: to skip or avoid a situation. For example, “I’m tired, I’m going to sit out the meeting.”

Sit down

Meaning: to move from standing to sitting on a surface. For example, “There’s a bench there. Sit down.”
