British Podcast Recommendations
I wanted to recommend something to you all – PODCASTS. I absolutely love podcasts and I listen to several per day. I have learned a lot from listening to podcasts. I always recommend them to my students.
Podcasts are completely FREE and they are an excellent source of listening practice. They are a recording of one or more people speaking about a topic.
Here's how you can listen to podcasts:
Download a podcast app on your smartphone. I use Castbox but iTunes is another one.
Search for topics or people that you are interested in, for example, 'learn English', 'visit London' or 'modern art' etc. Alternatively, you could search for a list of 'the best podcasts for English learners'.
When you've found a podcast that looks interesting, make sure that you are on WiFi and then click 'download'.
That's it!
The best thing is that you can listen to the podcast whilst you are offline (without WiFi). I listen to them while I'm exercising, cleaning, walking somewhere etc. Sometimes, transcripts are available for the podcast which can be really useful.
If you specifically want to listen to British pronunciation, here are some recommendations:
I particularly like 'TED Talks' which are very popular with English learners too. They are quite advanced level and they are mostly from American speakers, but if you would specifically like to listen to British accents, check out this list. They are extremely interesting and thought-provoking! They are on YouTube too, plus, you can find transcripts of the talks on the TED website https://www.ted.com
If you're wanting to listen to British accents like mine, then the BBC have excellent podcasts. '6 Minute English' uses English in every day situations and 'The English We Speak' teaches new phrases and British slang.http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/features/6-minute-english andhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/features/the-english-we-speak
My favourite BBC podcasts are Woman's Hour and Desert Island Disks. Check them out!
Answer Me This is a popular British podcast that I've been meaning to check out.
I enjoy Ctrl Alt Delete which is about people's relationships with the internet.
I also enjoy The Guilty Feminist which is a comedic podcast.
I hope this gives you a starting point with podcasts. I urge you to try them and to make them a part of your every day life. Perhaps you could listen to podcasts in English every day on your way to work.
