Ways to Practise English at Home with Your Children

Fiona from Profefiona.com has a couple of fun suggestions for simple games to play at home with your children.

‘Because’ is a great speaking activity! You start with a sentence, for example, “Jorge is happy.” or “I went to the supermarket”. Your child has to continue the story beginning with the word ‘because’. Eg “…because he’s got new shoes” or “…because I needed to buy food”. This continues in this way until it just cannot be continued any more! Encourage your children to be creative and silly with their ideas. This makes it more fun. You can throw or pass something, like a ball, to signal whose turn is next!

‘Fortunately/Unfortunately’ works in almost exactly the same way as ‘because’. You begin with a statement. The next student must start his or her sentence with either ‘Fortunately’ or ‘Unfortunately’. Whoever goes next does the same but using the opposite. The story should continue something like this “I went to the supermarket.” “Unfortunately, I didn’t have any money.” “Fortunately, everything was free that day!” “Unfortunately, they didn’t have what I wanted…” and so on!

Try to make these games a daily habit. Perhaps you could always play it at dinner time, for example. Incorporating English into your daily routines is a fantastic way to keep English fresh and consistent. Let me know in the comments if you have other tips for practising English with your children.
