Popular British Authors
Reading books by British authors is an excellent way to improve your English. You can learn so much including British slang, phrases, spellings and new vocabulary.
Here are some of my favourites that you can check out:
Neil Gaiman - Neil Gaiman writes mostly fantasy novels. His writing is popular for his ‘real world’
characters exploring the fantasy worlds that he creates.
Susan Hill – If you’re looking for something a little scarier and mysterious, Susan Hill is just that. The author of The Woman in Black and many more famous works, her novels are short and easy to read.
Mark Haddon - Mark Haddon became famous for The Curious Incident of the Dog in The Night-Time. Which has now been turned in to a popular stage production. His novels depict a very British lifestyle and are well loved in the U.K.
JoJo Moyes – Me Before You by JoJo Moyes became particularly popular in Britain after the movie was released in 2016. However, JoJo has published fifteen novels in the romance genre. Her novels are easy to read, touching and fun.
David Nicholls - One Day, Starter for Ten and The Understudy were all written by David Nicholls, and have become popular in Britain since the movie releases of the same titles. Maybe you could start by watching one of his movies and then reading the book.
Nick Hornby - Music, sport and aimless natured protagonists are what Nick Hornby is famous for. His novels follow people in Britain as they explore day-to-day life. I highly recommend About A Boy and there’s a great movie adaptation of the book too.
Sophie Kinsella – Sophie Kinsella became famous for her Shopaholic series, a series about Becky as she makes her way through life and the shops. She has also written sixteen other standalone novels. These funny books are set in typical British settings.
Malorie Blackman – Malorie Blackman writes mainly for a young adult audience, and some her stories feature diverse characters in dystopian worlds. Anyone of any age can enjoy her novels.
If you would like to add another British writer to this list, let me know in the comments.
Thanks for reading!
