The Great British Sunday Roast

If you ask British people “What is your favourite British meal?” or “What is your favourite thing to do on a Sunday?” many will reply with “Sunday Roast!”

A Sunday Roast is a delicious meal containing a roasted meat, such as beef, lamb or chicken (vegetarian 'nut roasts' are also available). This is accompanied by roasted potatoes, roasted vegetables, gravy, stuffing and a 'Yorkshire pudding'. Gravy is a rich sauce, usually made from the meat juices and other seasonings. Stuffing is a breadcrumb-based mixture. Onions, sage and other flavours are added and these can include pork and dried fruits. Each family may have their own recipe.

Yorkshire puddings are made from flour, eggs and milk and are similar to a pancake but they are roasted in the oven and this gives them a crispy consistency. They are very much loved in Britain.

The Sunday Roast is similar to Christmas Dinner, but usually with fewer 'trimmings' (side dishes). It originated in England and was the typical meal to eat after church on Sundays. The tradition continues to be popular to this day, even though most families do not attend church on Sundays. The meal can be eaten at home with family, or people often go out to a pub or restaurant for a roast dinner on Sundays. In recent years, there has been a rise in popularity of the pub Sunday Roast. It has become 'hip'. Pubs are full of people enjoying a pint of beer and a roast dinner on Sundays. Don't miss this if you visit Britain!
