How to Talk About Football in English
I hope you've been enjoying the World Cup. I certainly have and I am proud that England got to the semi-finals. It has been an exciting World Cup!
Here are some phrases and vocabulary to help you talk about it:
Kick off - This happens at the start of the match. It's the first kick of the ball.
The first half - The first 45 minutes of the match.
The second half - The second 45 minutes of the match.
Half time - The 15 minute break between the first and second half. After this time, the teams change sides on the pitch.
Added time - An extra few minutes that are added to each half to make up for stoppages and injuries, typically around 4-5 minutes. (Also called stoppage time or injury time.)
Extra time - an additional 30 minutes of 'extra time' are played if no team is winning after 90 minutes in a tournament game.
Penalties - A penalty is a shot at the goal taken after a player has been fouled in the penalty box, or at the end of extra time if the score is a draw in a tournament. The shot is taken from 11 metres away.
To attack - To drive the ball forward towards the goal.
To defend - To try to stop the other team scoring a goal.
To score - getting the ball in the goal.
To shoot - To make an attempt to get the ball in the goal.
To substitute - To take one player off the pitch and put a different player on in their place.
I hope this post helps you to be able to speak about football and the World Cup.
Good luck with your English.
