A Common Mistake That Native Speakers Make

I often see native English speakers making a common mistake. Take a look at the contractions below (contractions are shortened words made up of more than two words):

Would’ve

Could’ve

Should’ve

The way we say these words means that it sounds a lot like we are saying ‘would of’, ‘should of’ and ‘could of’. However, this means people get confused and think that those contractions are actually short for ‘would of’, etc.

Error alert! We do not use ‘of’ here, please see the correct words below:

Would have

Could have

Should have

Examples:

‘I should have phoned my friend last night.’

‘I would have taken the rubbish out for you.’

‘I could have taken you to the train station.’

So remember, even though it sounds like 'of' it's actually 'have'.
