How to Make Learning English With Flashcards Fun!

This guest post was written by a wonderful Turkish mummy, Tugba Serzen, who you can follow here.

Don’t just use flashcards in a boring way - make them more exciting!

Step 1: Save an old box. Any box is fine. Cereal boxes work well.

Step 2: Gather some glue, scissors and coloured paper or felt.

Step 3: Work with your child to turn the box into a hungry monster! Cut out some eyes, a mouth, hands etc. and stick them on. Cut a slot in the mouth big enough to post cards through. If your child would prefer a different character such as a lion, unicorn or Spider Man, you can make that instead. Your child can choose and be involved in the designing and making.

Step 4: Get a pack of flashcards or make your own by printing or drawing some and cutting them out.

Step 5: Show your child a flashcard and if they correctly identify what is on it, feed it to the monster!

Step 6: Change the tone of your voice to a funny one and say something like:

“I am hungry.”

“Oh, thank you I love it.”

“It is so yummy.”

“So tasty.”

That’s delicious.”

“I am starving.”

“I want some more please.”

“Can you give some more please?”

Try to use different phrases each time.

Step 7: Repeat this process with the different cards but on some occasions, switch things up to make it suspenseful and exciting and shout, “Oh no! I don’t want to eat it. I hate eating ……! (Whatever is on that flashcard)

“Yuck!”

“It is not really my thing!”

“I am stuffed.”

Try to use different phrases each time.

This is a creative and hilarious way to practise English. I hope you try it with your children and you all enjoy it as much as we do.
