Baby Clothing English Vocabulary
This post will teach you baby clothing vocabulary using my son’s clothes to demonstrate. I don’t include every possible clothing type, just the ones my son has. I’ll also point out differences between British and American vocabulary, as there are quite a few differences in this clothing topic.
These are vests. They are worn over a baby’s nappy (called diaper in American English) and under their clothes. You can see a sleeveless vest, a short-sleeved vest and a long-sleeved vest. They fasten with press studs.
These are called sleepsuits or babygrows (onesies in American English). They are a comfortable all-in-one item of clothing. The fasten with press studs.
Clothing worn on the top half of the body can be collectively called ‘tops’.
These are short-sleeved and long-sleeved t-shirts.
These are cardigans. The third one is hand-knitted. Cardigans fasten with buttons and can be worn open or closed. Cardi is an informal shortened version. For example, you can say, “Fasten your cardi.”
These are jumpers (called sweaters in American English). They are worn over t-shirts and/or vests.
These are hoodies. They have hoods and zips. The hood can be worn up or down. We zip up hoodies. For example, you can say, “Zip up your hoodie and put your hood up.”
These are jackets and coats. Jackets are lighter and shorter than coats. They are outerwear. Some coats and jackets have hoods. They zip up. You can say, “Fasten your coat.” or “Zip up your coat.”
Clothing worn on the legs can be collectively called ‘bottoms’.
These are jogging bottoms which are also called joggers (called sweat pants in American English). They have a stretchy drawstring waistband.
These are jeans. They are made of denim.
These are dungarees (called overalls in American English). They are an item consisting of trousers with a bib held up by straps over the shoulders. They can be made from denim or other materials.
These are rompers. They are an all-in-one outfit.
These are leggings. They are close-fitting and stretchy with a stretchy waistband. Jeggings are leggings made from denim.
These are trousers (called pants in American English). They come in many different styles.
These are shorts. They come in different lengths and styles.
These are socks. Babies often wear socks without shoes as they cannot walk.
These are a selection of hats. Babies can wear sun hats such as bucket hats or caps in sunny weather and wooly hats in cold weather.
These are bibs. My son has two different styles.
As you can see, there are quite a few differences between British and American English when it comes to this vocabulary.
